Whether you're looking to increase the size of your decoy spread or building your first spread mallard decoys are the versatile species of decoys to put out on the water. Since nearly all species of puddle ducks are attracted to mallards these decoys are a great choice.
Mallard decoys for sale are available in three different sizes including standard (life-size), magnum (over-sized), and super magnum. Although larger decoys can be seen from further distances it may not always be practical to use them simply based on they heavier weight. The best decoys for you will depend upon on your hunt ducks most often.
Keels are also available weighted or un-weighted which are often referred to as water keels. While water keel mallard decoys are much lighter to carry in they will not self upright like weighted keels will so if your hunting from a boat and weight is not a factor weighted keels are probably the best choice. But when hunting small waters or timber holes that require decoys being carried on your back or conditions of little wind water keel decoys are a good choice as require much less wind to naturally move on the water versus weighted keels.
Many hunters wonder just how many mallard decoys they need. In some cases this can be answered by ones budget or just how many decoys one can carry on their back. But if not consider the locations you will be hunting. If you can always setup exactly where the ducks want to be or if there’s a lot of competition from other hunters much larger decoy spreads will be needed. When hunting where the ducks want to be a dozen to two dozen mallards will most likely do.
Pro-Tips: When setting duck decoy spreads for hunting traffic ducks, using over-sized mallard decoys such as magnums or super magnums will increase the visibility of your decoy spread which can be very effective when hunting traffic ducks.
Always remember to leave a spot in your decoy spread for incoming mallards to land in. This spot or landing zone should also not be directly downwind of this open so incoming ducks do not have to fly over other decoys or obstacles such as tall thick weeds or small trees. Many hunters will simply toss out their mallard decoys without leaving a landing zone and then wonder why the ducks won’t commit.
Early season mallards typically will have a duller or brown plumage than more colorful late season mallard ducks. By mixing in more hens in your decoy spread will look much more realistic. As the season progresses then mix in more drakes to add color to your spread and also increase visibility to higher flying mallards.
