The Mason Duck Decoy Factory was operated during the years of 1896 through 1924 in Detroit, Michigan and founded by the late William James Mason. The Mason decoy factory produced several grades of decoys and advertised themselves to be the “Largest Manufacturers Of High Grade Decoys In The World”. As then Mason decoys are still highly sought after by collectors who have paid thousands of dollars for a single decoy.
Emigrating from Ireland to the U.S. it didn’t take long before Mason began enjoying the life of a sportsman and became more involved in the sport of duck hunting. Needing duck decoys for himself he began carving his own for hunting in the local marshes surrounding his home. After creating his own sporting goods company that later failed it wasn’t long before he started producing duck decoys for sale.
After the passing of his father Herbert Mason resumed responsibility of the Mason decoy factory and continued to grow the business. Up until this time only premier grade decoys had been available. Herbert introduced the standard grade decoy and challenge grade decoy to further grow the business. In addition to duck decoys Mason also offered geese, crows, shorebirds, doves, swans, and Brandt decoys.
In 1924 the Mason decoy factory was sold to the Pratt Company of Joliet, Illinois who later sold it to the Victor Animal Trap Decoy Company of Lititz, Pennsylvania who finally discontinued production in the 1960s.
